Text Box: Text Box: Grandma's House Child Care

Everything you ever wanted to know about
Grandma’s House 4K, but were afraid to ask:
Text Box: Why does my child need a 4K program?
Expectations for 5K are not what they used to be! Children are expected to enter 5K mastering a variety of skills from name and letter recognition to strong social skills. We can help make sure your child is ready! Children that turn four years old on, or before, Sept.1st will qualify for our 4K program which offers kindergarten readiness skills including: a strong literacy emphasis, letter and number recognition, individualized lessons & limited class sizes. Our 4K program allows children to develop their social skills, work independently and attend to tasks, all of which they are expected to master in 5K. If your child currently attends Grandma’s House, our program provides consistency with one less transition for your child prior to entering elementary school. They are familiar with the staff, the classrooms and their peers.

What are the teacher’s qualifications? Each of the Grandma’s House 4K classes are taught by certified teachers who hold 4-year degrees.

How big are the 4K classes? Class sizes start with at least ten children and are limited to fourteen with one teacher. This allows for a good deal of one-on-one instruction to reinforce and practice concepts.

Is there a registration fee and what is tuition? There is a $75.00 registration fee for our 4K programs, which covers the costs of computer software, Handwriting Without Tears workbook and materials, as well as the state required 2-inch rest mat. The daily tuition fee remains the same. In the event we do not register 10 children to start a 4K class in the fall, your registration fee will be applied to weekly tuition.

Are we allowed vacation days? Yes, our vacation policy for a child over two years old remains the same, however regular attendance is expected in the kindergarten program.

What is the curriculum like? Grandma’s House 4K teachers currently use the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum which is a multi-sensory approach that begins with a focus on fine motor skill development, moves into upper case letter formation and recognition using just four basic shapes and incorporates handwriting practice pages as well. For math concepts, we use an approach that allows for hands-on, concrete experiences. Our daily group time calendar alone incorporates counting, number recognition, place value groupings, patterning and estimation. This is the first year you will see your children completing worksheets in their Grandma’s House experience to practice letter and number formation and reinforce concepts. Learning centers are used daily to provide hands on learning.

Will my child have work outside of the classroom?
The children do get “homework” in 4K, which they love! Typically on Thursdays a sheet is sent home to reinforce letter sounds. You and your child choose one of the three simple activities to complete and return on Monday morning.

Will we continue to receive progress reports for our child? Yes, typically all Grandma’s House children are assessed twice a year, but in 4K your child will be assessed three times during the September through May class. Child Portfolios will continue to be used and reviewed during parent-teacher conferences. Your child’s teacher will recommend placement for the next school year based on the last evaluation.

Do the children go on any field trips?
The 4K teachers plan numerous field trips, which parents are welcome to chaperone, to reinforce different units they are teaching. We have ventured to the Zoo for many classes, the Milwaukee Public Museum, restaurants, libraries, performances and concerts just to name a few!
